That’s a good thing, because the unlimited and total slaughter of zombies in various ways is the very essence of the gameplay in Dead Island 2 for free. Perhaps it’s not perfect in every aspect, but it’s well-crafted enough to offer a lot of fun from start to finish. The game is pure guilty pleasure, like kitschy action movies or B-grade horror flicks. The plot and dialogue are filled with cringe, but the enjoyment is excellent, and you simply don’t want to leave the screen, especially when playing with friends in co-op.
Moreover, this bloody carnage is beautifully packaged. Others offer slightly more noticeable effects, like choosing between dodging and blocking.
Health recovery during constant attacks or longer fury duration at the expense of declining health would have been enough to simply unlock the following perks without any choice option, as a thorough analysis and card selection don’t change much in the gameplay. It feels a bit like a “filler” in the style of Far Cry to add another RPG element.
The same goes for the choice of exterminators, who, in addition to their voice and appearance, differ in endurance, resistance, and health regeneration speed. Theoretically, we can find someone here representing our preferred playstyle, especially if we plan to play cooperatively, but a few lines claiming to represent statistics don’t reveal much at the beginning about what we can truly expect from a given character, and restarting the game multiple times to test a character can be tedious. It’s a shame the developers didn’t prepare an introduction to better acquaint players with each of the exterminators.
