I won’t hide it – this is one of the most important premieres of 2024 for me. Manor Lords has the potential to become a fantastic title, although I have no doubt that it is only at the beginning of this journey. The game is just entering Early Access, and while there are no reasons for concern at the moment, there’s always a risk that not all planned goals will be achieved.

Review of the Amazing Game Manor Lords

In the game, we build small settlements that we then develop freely until they start to have urban features (I reached the maximum level of development somewhere around 200 inhabitants). However, it’s the Middle Ages, so don’t expect sophisticated structures – wood and mud reign supreme, and even a larger town with cobbled streets can only dream of more.

I used the plural because we’re not limited to just the capital – we can develop all the regions on the map, creating an entire network of settlements. However, these settlements will be quite independent – trading goods between them turns out to be limited and inefficient, so sometimes it’s easier to produce the needed goods locally or buy them at a factory.

A game created by one person

One of the factors that sparked interest in Manor Lords is its creator – Grzegorz Styczeń, operating under his studio Slavic Magic. Yes, this game is being created largely by one person, which in itself is attention-grabbing. In combination with the effect that this author has achieved (also in terms of marketing – Manor Lords free download has made it to the wishlists of over 2 million Steam users), we can talk about a true event from which large studios, struggling with releasing a coherent and polished game, especially in terms of technical aspects, can take an example. (I’m looking at you, Cities Skylines 2).

Let’s move on to specifics: will Manor Lords fulfill the hopes placed in it? It depends. For the first 20 hours, I had a great time and was completely charmed by its climate. Like a child, I enjoyed every fence, hut, or leisurely plodding ox. However, over time, I began to be bothered by the shallowness of the gameplay and various errors and hiccups; fortunately, a significant part of them is due to the early stage of the game’s development and will likely be fixed relatively quickly.

The city builder genre is quite specific, and many mechanics repeat themselves in subsequent titles, especially in the case of smaller projects. We have the same buildings, resources, and a very similar way of building. Manor Lords, however, proves that it doesn’t have to be this way and offers a fresh approach to the topic. Unfortunately, not everything is sufficiently explained and intuitive, which can make some mechanics seem unclear or completely unnoticed by the player.

Let’s start with the basics – to build anything, we need logs. These are also used for the production of planks. The issue of transporting felled tree trunks complicates things a bit – in many games, a lumberjack simply carries such a log on his shoulder, putting many a strongman to shame. In Manor Lords torrent, you have to drag it along the ground with the help of an ox. And an ox is a luxury item, and in the whole village, we have only one at the beginning.

The transport of logs is an important factor practically independent of the level of development of the settlement, and it is from this that the pace of construction depends. Buying more oxen will certainly help, although the process of building a new district still takes a lot of time.

So, what do we do in download Manor Lords? At the moment, we have three modes at our disposal, which can be briefly summarized as a sandbox focused on building, classic gameplay, and a mode based on constant combat and threat. At least in theory.

Our task, therefore, will be to achieve the appropriate level of settlement development, defeat the enemy (a despicable baron who has unlawfully occupied several regions on the map), or survive raids by bandits.

Here, I must complain for a moment about the last of the modes, which was supposed to be “dangerous” with “harassing” bandits. It turns out that it is practically no different from the module with the baron. There are not noticeably more bandits, and the raids are identical – this is basically a sandbox with occasional small attacks, and we arm the peasants more for our own satisfaction than out of a sense of danger.

Size doesn’t matter.

A peasant is as you see them: two legs and a moderate enthusiasm for work. However, there is something even slower than a peasant – a peasant with an ox. This is where things get serious because, although the ox reaches a sensible speed only after accelerating 12 times, it is crucial for transporting logs, and without its help, we will not even build a hut made of mud and straw.

If we are counting on the way of rapid expansion known from some city builders by flooding the construction site with workers, we will be sorely disappointed – we usually have few people, and they are waiting for the ox with that unfortunate beam. Meanwhile, winter seems to be looming over the inhabitants and threatening not only with cold but also with hunger, which makes it necessary to plan the construction accordingly (especially at the beginning).

In the game, we have speeds x1, x4, and x12 at our disposal. The last option, as is often the case in builders, is useful especially in the early stages of play when the settlement is developing slowly, and we don’t have much to do while waiting for those unfortunate beams. However, if we are in no hurry, it is worth simply enjoying the rural views.

Playing Manor Lords free download, I felt how huge the significance of distance is. Here, even the most hardened opponents of the concept of a 15-minute city will spend a lot of time analyzing paths and optimizing distances. Because distance is time. And time is money. Or its lack, if goods do not reach the factory.

Unfortunately, the economy and production chains seem quite shallow. I write this from the perspective of someone who enjoys that specific tickling in the brain when trying to perfectly balance supplies on several islands in Anno 1800 and who made a special spreadsheet for planning crop rotation on several fields in Farthest Frontier. And I’ll say it straight out – I expected more, better, more interesting.

On the other hand, a less engaged player should find the operation of the system pleasant – its low complexity allows you to understand relatively quickly what and in what quantities is needed by the inhabitants. Just as with the construction of craft workshops, here too we are faced with a twist, because fields are not the best source of food. Once again, upgrades to houses and appropriately loose development turn out to be key. You can grow wheat or – after purchasing an upgrade – rye, but it will be much more efficient to create houses with enough space to set up chicken coops and large vegetable gardens. Although a responsible nobleman will want to take care of the varied diet of his peasants, so some fields will still be created in the region.

The nobility does not work

How to rate Manor Lords on the day of its early access debut? It’s a difficult task. The game is beautiful and rustic, realistic, engaging, and very satisfying. At the same time, with each passing hour, I felt more and more that it lacked depth and that I didn’t have much to do in it.

Builders are often positions that attract for hundreds of hours. Will Manor Lords be one of them? I don’t know. The premiere should provide about 20 hours of great fun, but even if we add all the features visible in the game that are still under construction, it may be too little to attract the player for much longer. Meanwhile, the creator speaks quite enigmatically about his plans for development, so it’s hard to predict what the final shape of his work will be and whether the accents placed in it will change.

But is that bad? No. This title offers exactly what was promised to us, namely the development of a medieval settlement in a phenomenal, realistic graphic setting. However, it seems that at least part of the players, hungry and looking for new experiences, expected significantly more from Manor Lords. And that’s simply – very good game.
