The journey to the distant corners of the universe is never a pleasure. First, decades of mandatory hibernation, then a lifetime of hard work to pay off the travel expenses. And there’s always a warning not to trust aggressive advertisements. However, The Outer Worlds shows that approaching any situation with humor always helps.

Obsidian Entertainment, known for titles like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity, among others, including the online game Skyforge (with Allods Team), ventured into a survival RPG set in space this time. It’s time to see if the much-hyped The Outer Worlds, based on proven ideas, lives up to the creators’ promises and the heightened expectations of future players.

Space Nap Extended Beyond Measure

Although from the outset it can be said that The Outer Worlds does not introduce any revolutions to the genre, it must be acknowledged that the scenario is engaging, even though it relies on familiar clichés from related titles, sci-fi movies, or books. The action takes place in the future, where humanity colonizes new worlds, and large corporations have the right to buy newly discovered star systems and govern them almost at their own discretion. As a colonist, we board the spaceship Hope, which is supposed to take us to the Arcadia System in 10 years, wanting to start a new life.

Unfortunately, the stay in space is significantly prolonged, and when we finally wake up from hibernation, we find ourselves on the planet Terra 2, where the living conditions are certainly not as expected. As usual, we will try to survive and discover our own destiny, navigating between greedy corporations and ordinary people trying to live in harsh conditions, while avoiding various dangers, or confronting them. How we do it depends on us. We can rebel against the reality we find, cooperate with existing factions, or mix a bit of everything.

Unfortunately, we will not only be able to play the flawless hero like in the Mass Effect series, because the plot, despite its relative non-linearity, makes us immerse our hands in blood, often choosing between one evil and another. It’s a bit of a shame, but the created universe is not a nice place, and all characters understand this and don’t have much of a grudge against us (except for a handful of insults).

Do What You Want – The Consequences Will Find You

Over time, (if we want), we’ll acquire a group of interesting companions, with whom it’s possible to establish quite deep relationships, although romancing the opposite sex is almost impossible. Nonetheless, congratulations to the creators for, despite a lack of originality, creating a narrative backdrop where the line between good and evil is blurred, and every character encountered has their reasons for acting in a certain way.

The dialogues in the game can be really long, and we get quite a lot of options to choose from during conversations, some of which are conditioned by certain attributes we possess. Moreover, there is also a subtle dose of humor and sarcasm, so instead of dry talk, we can freely bite back at our interlocutors. Some might say, just another dystopia like many we’ve already seen, but it’s good enough to get swept up in. Depending on our style of play, we’ll spend up to 40 hours with the game, which isn’t mind-blowing, but it’s not bad either.

Gameplay Overview The Outer Worlds Free Download

The gameplay, contrary to the first impression, is not complicated. If someone has played the aforementioned Fallout: New Vegas, or any of the Mass Effects, there will be no surprises. We follow our fate, exploring the celestial bodies of the Arcadia system from a first-person perspective, thanks to our “own” spacecraft, completing available main and side tasks in the given area. Unfortunately, there is no open world here, but the available locations are quite large, making the fast travel option a really pleasant aspect of exploration, although it’s marred by the fact that loading screens take an excruciatingly long time.

Sometimes it’s faster to reach the chosen destination on foot. It’s just a shame that regardless of the chosen role, sharpshooting is unavoidable. Sure, you can sneak, attack by surprise, use melee weapons, or persuade, which often proves effective, especially when changing appearance with a hologram, but sooner or later it’s easiest to solve problems with a gun in hand. This is facilitated by the fact that encountered enemies are not the smartest, and although they care about their safety by seeking effective cover, they are unable to conduct any coordinated action in a group.

In battle, companions significantly support us, to whom we can issue simple orders or set behavior, but in the heat of battle, it’s better to rely only on oneself. Contrary to promises, their total death only occurs on the highest difficulty level. This is a good move to save a lot of frustration. During combat, the option to slow down time helps, which allows us (after training) to aim at specific parts of the enemy’s body, although I personally used it rarely.

Retrofuturism in the Literal Sense

The most negative points from players the title will surely receive for its visual presentation, which on the PlayStation 4 looks, euphemistically speaking, stale, although this is not about its style but the technical layer, for which the Unreal Engine 4 is responsible. In any case, one should not expect fireworks, although the creators have really squeezed a lot out of it, creating a really palatable survival, retrofuturistic atmosphere, like in New Vegas or Fallout 4, though without the atomic bomb. It’s nice to look at sparkling neon lights and sun-drenched landscapes, or the sky above the Terra 2 colony.

But let’s return to the technicalities, where things are not so rosy. This is especially evident in the faces of encountered people; while they look passable during conversations, when we look at the faces of our companions outside of dialogues, they seem like masks. In any case, there’s no need to elaborate – just look at the pictures to notice that the level of detail is hard to consider satisfactory. Personally, this did not particularly bother me in The Outer Worlds, apart from the aforementioned loading screens, but most of the audience of this title values visual impressions and will certainly be sharply sarcastic.

However, I did like the propaganda boards and pseudo biological informational drawings, which we can see as advertisements here and there, and during loading screens. The animation itself runs smoothly at 60 frames per second; in any case, I did not notice any major slowdowns. The character voices are left in English, which are of good quality, and we received Polish subtitles, although there are occasional errors in the text, and furthermore, the translation of some English neologisms into our language sounds overly funny.

In my opinion, The Outer Worlds is a good game, despite its outdated visual presentation and lack of originality. Fortunately, the script with a dash of sarcastic humor serves as a great driving force and encourages exploration of the Arcadia system, although the title itself does not offer anything we haven’t already seen or experienced. However, it will provide a suitable dose of entertainment for undemanding players.

FAQs games

  1. What is the most effective overall damage type to add to a weapon in The Outer Worlds? Plasma damage is generally the most effective for most enemies and is enhanced by any level of Science skill. Shock damage is particularly good against automechanicals and also provides increased damage against most other enemy types.
  2. How does the armor system work in The Outer Worlds? Armor in the game applies a flat damage reduction to each bullet fired from a gun or each swing from a melee weapon. This means that weapons with high DPS but low single-shot damage are most affected by armor. High gun skills, which enable critical hits that ignore enemy armor, can mitigate this effect.
  3. Are unique weapons worth using in The Outer Worlds? Most unique weapons are found at a fixed level and are costly to upgrade to your current level, making them often less useful compared to regular weapons. However, they can be valuable for selling if you don’t want to keep them for a collection.
  4. Can you give some tips on managing inventory weight in The Outer Worlds? It’s a good practice to break down low-level weapons and armor as soon as you pick them up since they are more valuable as parts. Also, keep an eye on the number of Adreno doses and mods you carry, as they can add up in weight. It’s often unnecessary to increase carry weight through perks since you’re usually close to a vending machine for offloading loot.
  5. What are some tips for outfit and skill management for both the player character and companions? Carrying spare outfits to boost Stealth, Tech, and Dialog skills is beneficial, especially when heavy armor reduces Stealth skills. Skill bonuses conferred by armor apply to your companions as well, so equipping them appropriately can boost your skills or affect them negatively if not managed well.
